When reading many of the personal finance blogs I tend to get discouraged (and a little bit jealous) when I view the bloggers financial net worth. As someone who currently has an overall negative financial net worth I can relate to many adults with ADDwho use their net worth to help judge their self worth. They look at their bad financial habits and opportunities missed and get depressed about the future. Self worth has nothing to do with net worth. Self worth is about looking in the mirror and accepting that you have made mistakes in the past while trying to develop positive habits to help your future. Its about using all of the gifts that you have to help others. It about getting back up every time something knocks you off the path to your dreams. By developing positive financial habits to grow your net worth, you will know you are also doing something to increase you self worth.

I pay attention to negative net worths becoming less negative or positive. That's inspiring to watch. I usually don't care if someone has a $100k or a $1M net worth, because often they include the value of their house in their net worth calculations, so that distorts things and makes homeowners a lot "richer."

Focusing on your Net Worth will improve your Net Worth. I strongly believe it. While it may be depressing to see a negative number don't despair. The journey of digging yourself out of a negative situation into a positive one can be the most enlightening and satisfying things you ever do.

I agree that for those trying to climb their way out of debt looking at just the numbers can be frustrating. It is one of the reasons I added the monthly "% change" ranking to my list - to hopefully encourage those with negative net worth to post their progress as I feel these people are the ones that can really motivate others that are in the same financial situation.
The key is to focus on the progress made and if you keep making a positive progress, there will be a time when you will have others looking at your numbers with a bit of jealousy.
