I was reading an article by Pete Quily titled "Top 10 Advantages of ADD in a High Tech Career", and it inspired me to write on article about why starting up an Internet based business can be ideal for adults with ADD.
Many ADD entrepreneurs thrive on the fact that they can work on growing their business without all of the structure of being employed by someone else. However not all new business opportunities are ideal for adults with ADD. Many ADD entrepreneurs make the mistake of impulsively jumping into a business opportunity that they are truly not passionate about. ADD entrepreneurs who open a traditional “brick and mortar" business often get burned out by the regimented schedule and tedious hours. Starting an Internet based business has several advantages for the ADD adult.
* Internet based businesses have flexible hours - The flexible hours allows the ADD adult to take needed breaks during the day, and it also allows the owner to hyper focus on the business for as long as you want. The flexible hours allows you to work on your business when you are most productive. Many adults with ADD are night owls and having an Internet based business allows them to work late into the night.
* Internet based businesses allow for creativity - ADD adults tend to be creative and are more responsive to visual cues. The Internet is the perfect place for ADD entrepreneurs to explore their creative minds and create visually appealing websites.
* Internet based businesses tend to have lower start up costs - Many ADD entrepreneurs tend to juggle several businesses at once. The low start up costs allows them the ability to take risks, and to develop a business while maintaining their other businesses. Taking risk and keeping their work fresh allows for the stimulation that ADD adults need in order to succeed.
you're right John, net businesses can be great for ADDers, a natural fit. But we have to watch out we don't spend too much time hyperfocusing on the wrong stuff:)
