Many people are not aware of just how much research goes into figuring out how to set up a supermarket. I am sure most of you have bought a candy bar, magazine, or another impulse item at the register. But the rest of the supermarket is set up to increase impulse spending as well; placing more expensive items at eye level, making you walk to the back of the store for milk, and putting candy next to the cereal are all ways to increase spending. Another trick that can be quite frustrating to ADD adults is when stores regularly move items to different sections or aisles of the store. It is often used so that you will try different brands and to keep you longer in the store. Making shopping decisions can be difficult for an ADD adult, but the frustration of having to make an unplanned decision or an unplanned search for an item can make grocery shopping completely unbearable.
Many adults with ADD find that shopping at a smaller market with less choices, less stimulation, and less tricks a much more enjoyable experience. You could also try to buy some or all of your groceries items on-line in order to avoid the big supermarkets. If you can not avoid the big super markets, understanding the supermarket tricks will help you to avoid overspending on groceries.
